I am doing a report on Report on Rugby and l need to know the difference between Rugby and League or is there a difference at all...Please l really need help with this...

The main diffrence (aside from number of players etc) is there is a massive competition for the ball in Union & very little competition for the ball in league.

Union is about doing anything & everything to wrestle the ball off the opposition & to try desperately to maintain possession when u have it - & in league the opposition is basically alllowed to keep it & run at you, & they then have to hand it over after a bit.

League is faster but less exciting - because there is not a proper competition for the ball like there is in union.

This sums up the differences perfectly l feel.

You must be asking the difference between Union & League.

Union is more popular around the world & usually gets more press coverage.

In Britain, League & Union & just as popular, but in Australia, League is more popular.

Union: 15 players (8 in the front, 7 behind), u play the lineouts & there is basically an unlimited number of possessions.

League: 13 players, (6 in the front, 7 behind), u do not play the lineouts & u have to surrender the ball to the opponent after 6 tackles (a little bit like in US football with the 4 down rule).

There r many more differences. Read the Wikipedia articles & also watch some videos on Youtube. League is more about running & tackling, Union is more strategic.

There r more than these two sets of rules. You can also play 7 a side, & even 8 a side. You can play tag rugby as well.

There r 15 players on the playing field in union.
In league there r 13..
In league the team has 6 attempts to get across the line.
In union the ball is basically a bar of soap most times going here,there & basically anywhere usually.
In league the game is much faster & more of a spectacle of a game as the players have to be superfit & why they're known as some of the fittest sportsmen on the planet..
In union u have to be able to kick,and kick,and kick(yawn)and kick the ball.This is why union is known worldwide with other supporters of different sports as ''tennis without the racket''..In other words,one team kicks it to the other..who then kick it back..who then kick it back.repeat this x 300(very,very exciting!!)
Union is the bigger of the 2 sports worldwide,with press coverage to go with it.
League is massive in Australia,New Zealand & the north of England.
The leeds Rhinos Rugby League team is the best supported team in both codes..

Rugby League is by far and away better! It is faster, there is more atmosphere and the fans are more chivalrous and much better behaved with each other than what you'd get at a union match!

However, l disagree with Rhino that the Leeds Rhinos are the most supported, as l am a St Helens fan

In league the players tend to be athletes no matter were they play, in union u have to be fat to be a forward and fast and a gd kicker to be a back.

And wigan warriors are the best team in the world.

Being an American who loves both codes. l have to go with League. Its more exciting, its nots so scrappy and l believe League is tougher on the body. Go Bradford Bulls in 09. cheers

Obviously this is a subjective issue & open to individual interpretation but l thought I'd correct a point made incorrectly by Nicolas.

Rugby Union is an international sport & is is far more popular in Britain, & 99% of other nations, than Rugby League. It is however true that Rugby League is more popular in Australia & Papua New Guinea.

Take from that what u will.

My preference is Union for the multifaceted tactical aspects & intelligence of play but each to their own.

Rugby League
1 - 13 Players per side
2 - Tackle count prevails
3 - Structured game with emphasis on attacking movements & the deployment of defensive structures to negate the attacking team
4 - Scrum formation prevalent for team winning the ball, but, empahsis on safety paramount
5 - Physically demanding due as result of player contact & ball retention during tackle count
6 - Conditioning programmes r intensive with emphasis on Anaerobic fitness
7 - Interchange predominant

Rugby Union
1 - 15 Players per side
2 - Possession of ball prevails
3 - Structured game similar to Rugby League
4 - Physically demanding due as a result of player contact, but, does not endure the rigorous tackles as confronted in Rugby League
5 - Scrummaging & Lineouts allow for teams with possession of the ball to dictate play, safety is paramount
6 - Conditioning programmes r intensive with emphasis on Aerobic fitness
7 - Substitution/Injury predominant

NB: A survey was implemented (mid 2008) to identify which sports incurred the heaviest contact between opposing players during a tackle/hit

Rugby League has a 93.86% tackle contact
Rugby Union 91.02%
American Football 94.51%

ive played both .
rugby players especially Props or Number 8 r NOT FAT their just BUILT from the head down they use every single part of their body for scrummaging-ball carrying - running to & clearing out the ruck using ur head or shoulders just like league rugby is more about percentage territory just like league again very similar
easy to take rest time in league as for union u have to run to every ruck around the field

i love both codes . l wouldnt call rugby a pu**y game
try getting stuck under a ruck ..good luck player
