Are ''cauliflower ears '' from boxing or rugby painful ??

Painful when you actually get them - a whack on the ear usually does the trick. Also a bit painful having them drained. Our club doctor used to drain the blood with a needle & syringe, then stitch a piece of gauze to my ear using a button to hold the gauze in place & let them drain fully over a week or so.

Once they've healed then they're not painful at all.

Not as painful as a kick in the balls.

l do not know, l do not have them. l was lucky enough to have a doctor who drained and packed them well enough when they filled up with blood that the cauliflower part never developed.

l mention this in the event that you are sitting there with a big swollen ear right now. If so, see a doc. get it drained and packed so that the blood is going where it is supposed to, to the ear cartilage, before the cartilage dies and you end up with a cauliflower ear.

Cauliflower ear can be caused by participation in a few different sports, including the ones u mentioned. It is also quite common in wrestling as well. And yes, it can be quite painful for the afflicted individual due to the swelling in the ears, especially since the ears r a tender part of the body to begin with. After the ears r drained & healed though, the pain should disappear in time. As was mentioned in a previous answer, taking care of the swelling right away is key to avoiding the cauliflower appearance. (Also, wearing the proper snug-fitting headgear while engaged in the sport will usually do the trick.) One of the assistant coaches for my old high school wrestling team drained the ears of two of my brothers. The older one has huge cauliflowers for both of his ears, while the younger one, who wrestled in h.s. 7 yrs. later, has relatively normal-looking ears. The difference, of course, is that this particular coach learned the proper draining procedure & how to keep the swelling down. The point in all this is that u need to find someone that really knows what they r doing, which may not always be the doc at the local clinic.
