Our no. 9 has broken her arm, and we have the biggest match of the year coming up in a few weeks. l really want the position (currently playing winger), l am the right build for it, ball skills are good etc, but have only been playing for 6 months. What else do l need to work on to ensure that l am the one they pick?

You need to be able to make fast, good decisions according to field position, setup of the other team. If u know the plays & when to call them it will make a major difference. You must make fast choices like throw to the backs, forwards, or setup a punch, but u can not let yourself move to fast & get into a panic. It is good to keep a clear mind on what is happening & forget about what just happened & look two plays ahead. Do not be afraid to take a hit once u have put two hands on that ball. Coming from the wing its going to be very different because u lead the team unlike at the wing u follow & wait for the ball then explode down the line for a try.

As a scrumhalf, u will be responsible for directing both ur forwards & ur back line. You should thus now how both operates, the various plays involved with each, & how best to direct them.

It should be u pulling forwards out of a lost ruck/maul on defense. It should be u calling the plays on the back line. You will most likely be called to do kicks, so work on that. Know the rules of the game; be aware of how penalties work. Learn the way ur team works.

Most importantly, express ur desire to play scrum. Your coaches r not just going to guess; it is up to u to let them know.

You need to be a good passer expecially long passes and quite a fast runner

work on passing off both hands, work on your agility even if you are fast which you most probably are coming from the wing. Be very vocal in training to show the coaches your up to the challenge.Try not to get sucked into the rucks an mauls or pulled into them by the opposition. have good communication (get them forwards into them rucks n mauls grab & shove them in there if u need to), accurate passes (being able to grab & pass the ball with out taking steps one step off one foot is good & being able to pass both ways is great), good aggression (scoop the ball & run it if needed to but make sure u have support dont run it with out the forwards behind you) & knowledge of ur set plays ur always the starter of set plays so know ur role!!! l been playen rugby since l was 4 & am now 21 so l know a lil bit about the game CHUR CHUR & good luck

You need mainly to communicate to both the forward pack and the back line well, you also need to be an accurate passer of the ball and have good concentration. These are the main skills to focus on.
