For instance; Ali Williams always seems to be out to the side distanced from the rest, what are the reasons behind this?

Is there a system or do they just go wherever they want?

you usually stand where you stand when you practice the Haka however you can stand where you want to. The leader does stand behind his troops but thats not the rule of thumb, some like to lead by example and some like to feed off their mate is and at the same time gee them up

Normally, the best person leads the Haka. The worst people are often standing at the back.

Ali performs the haka with alot of heart & he always stands infront on the side - He claimed that position
The all blacks use a kaumatua (maori elder) to teach them the haka ''properly'' - You will find the boys that r in front r the ones who perform the haka with alot of heart, who do the pukana (pull the ugly face) actually, they perfom it properly - 2nd line r the ones who know it but do not give everything like the 1st row & so on to the 3rd row.

Btw, Ali always says ''it brings the maori out in me'' haha
